He received a master of arts degree in 1966 and a doctor of education degree in 1973 from Indiana University.

He was talented at his trade and loved woodworking projects and fishing. Born April 26, 1947, at Seymour, he was a son of Carl E. "Bud" Sr. and Ruby M. Richardson Gilbert, who preceded him in death.
He married Mary K. Whitten Hocking Dec. 31, 2002, at Seymour, and she survives. He also is survived. by five children, Kevin (Penny) Gilbert and Rodney Gilbert, both of Greenwood, David (Debbie) Hocking and Michael Hocking, Seymour, and Donna (Todd) Mellencamp, Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, Bryan, Blake, Kory, Corey, Kendra, Zachary, Dylan and Chanel; two sisters, Cindy (Mike) Croucher, Carmel, and Lechia (Jim) Clark, Salem; an aunt, Ginny (Bob) Smith, Seymour; and will be missed by his Jennings County Hospice nurse, Karel Ann Randall.
He also is survived by his mother and father-in-law Harold and Gertrude Whitten; and several sisters and brothers-in-law, Wayne (Kathy) Whitten, Jim (Linda) Whitten, Harold (Joyce) Whitten, Gilbert (Loretta) Whitten, Mount Carmel, Tom (Vinetta) Whitten, Dallas, Texas, Pat Hinterscher, Olney, and Clara Whitten, Prestonsburg, Ky. Piece HENDRICKSVILLE (AP) Mitch Daniels began a three-day tour of Indiana on Monday, exchanging hugs and handshakes at some of the favorite places he visited during his successful campaign for governor.
"Everybody here who we met on our previous trips or who was a little part of our success last week, we are eternally grateful," Daniels told dozens of people crammed inside Rosie's Diner in Hendricksville, a small community about 10 miles west of Bloomington. "There are people in this room who put me up overnight, there are people who fed me, and everybody means a lot to us." The feeling was mutual for Rose Bastin. In a way, she said, Daniels had put Hendricksville and her diner on the map. "Best thing that ever happened to us," she said as a waitress, weaving around supporters and reporters, tried to serve the crowd. "I hoped he would win, but I didn't think he'd come back again." Daniels traveled the state relentlessly over 14 months, visiting each of 92 counties at least three times and putting more than 85,000 miles on the donated recreational vehicle he called "RV One." He had said that every city and town deserved to be part of a "comeback" he promised to lead.
He said Monday that he would not forget about the little places after he is sworn in as governor in January, nor spend all his time in Indianapolis. It was a pledge he first renewed at Charlie McDonald's diner in Acton, a small community in the southeastern corner of Marion County. "It's in those places that we learned so much and met so many friends, and we don't intend to quit that," Daniels said. More than 100 people showed up to greet him, including McDonald. He said he had never voted, and didn't last week, but Daniels stopped at his diner during the campaign and he liked him.
Daniels liked the place so much, he filmed part of a television commercial there. "A lot of these people are Democrats who changed over out here," McDonald said.
